Leader Coaching Case Studies
He produced very good bottom line results, but his emotional intelligence cost him…
His people interactions (or, more precisely, the lack of interaction) had his people perceive him as non-communicative, moody and self-interested. During the time we worked together, feedback about how he was perceived and some fairly significant behavioural fine-tuning took this high performing and otherwise well-respected leader to the next level. His people ended up respecting him for the way he went about his job…for treating them as valued and respected contributors…as well as for the results he achieved. That certainly meant the healthy bottom line was more likely to stay healthy in the future. Improved morale, motivation, staff turnover and productivity gave the organization the insurance it needed.
Her team liked her; that actually was her goal. But was she running an effective department?
Not really… Her team thought she was a good boss…well, except that they could see that she wasn’t doing nearly enough about some pockets of poor performance. Not only did the poor performers’ productivity suffer, so did the productivity of the others in the team who were frustrated because they perceived that nothing was done about it. This leader simply wasn’t managing the people side of the business with the certainty and self-assurance that was needed. With coaching, she learnt how to very effectively and confidently handle her poor performers, as well as make some other tough decisions that she needed to make. She’s since been promoted twice.
This leader wasn’t trusted by his boss, or his team members either…
His “ready—fire—aim” approach was effective in some situations. But it made his boss and his team members very nervous. And it had him making poor decisions on a number of occasions too. We worked on how he approached decisions, and had him tailor his method to suit the situation rather than use a one-style-suits-all approach. His boss, his team, and many others in the organization now see him as the most professional, most effective leader they have.
